The Food Security, Safety and Sustainability task force was established in 2010, as a platform for British Chamber members to exchange views and enhance understanding regarding the food security issues, particularly following the food crisis of 2008 and the resulting EU agenda on food security.
This task force aim is to address issues of interest, related to food production and consumption, safety and sustainability. Its remit would therefore be distinct from the existing Health, Consumer Rights and Social Affairs task force, in that it would focus exclusively on agriculture and food, and its sustainability and safety along the whole chain, as opposed to other consumer products.
The following provide examples of the types of issues which will be addressed by this task force:
- The need for greater public and private investment to enhance agricultural production and food competitiveness
- More public and private research, including ICT.
- How to communicate sustainable food production to consumers
- The need to produce more food from less resources and with reduced impact on the environment
- Specific sustainability topics such as climate, water, biodiversity, soil protection,
- CAP reform
- Food and Feed regulation
- International food trade
- The need for transparent and science based policy-making
With such a diverse and international membership, and excellent Brussels network in place, the British Chamber of Commerce in Belgium is ideally placed to provide a neutral platform, where members representing different elements of the food value chain, may meet, discus and organise events. With no other organisation currently offering this facility, such a unique and food specific initiative would address a currently unmet need, and would position the British Chamber at the centre of one of the most important political and societal needs of our time.
